Block 17 is located on Congo's basin and is part of the deepwaters Blocks.

Exploration activity in this Block started in January 1993 and ended in December 2003. This effort resulted in 17 commercial discoveries and in two dry wells. From this Block comes Girassol, the biggest oil field discovery in Angola's E&P history.

Later efforts based on the re-evalution of 3D-seismic data resulted in two more commercial wells: Hortensia-1 and Acacia-1.
